About Council

taree council admin building
We formed in 1981 from an amalgamation of the former Taree Municipal Council, Wingham Municipal Council and most of the former Manning Shire Council.

Our Local Government Area covers 3,752 square km, stretching from Johns River in the north to Wang Wauk River in the south and up to 100 kilometres to the western hinterland.

We have a popularly elected Mayor, eight elected Councillors and the Administration which is headed by the General Manager.

We own and manage the Manning Entertainment Centre, the Manning Regional Art Gallery and five Manning Valley Libraries.

Our hope for the future

We believe in the future of the Manning Valley

And we are committed to working together -

  • To create a regional centre that is prosperous and sustainable
  • To nurture a community that is caring, healthy and vibrant
  • And to preserve this beautiful, rare and special place for the generations that follow
